For my 2018 calendar, I invited art friends and colleagues to contribute their favorite FLAVOR combination, along with a recipe and a story. I received 12 great combos and I used the ingredients for my inspiration.
This month I’m featuring the story and recipe of artist Gretha Linwood. I told her that I wanted to use cranberries and oranges, but she could come up with any recipe she likes. And she did…for the holidays!
Here’s the still life. I like the cranberries and orange but it needed something “green”…

…so I added some “green” from our jasmine plant.

My sister makes this recipe for our family’s Thanksgiving dinner. In fact, she is “required” to bring it every year! It’s from the Everett Herald November 19, 1989 issue. I have a sneaking suspicion that since she has sent the recipe to me, my sister will expect me to share in the duty of bringing it to the family table.

Cranberry-Orange Relish
1 12 oz. bag fresh cranberries, coarsely chopped in food processor
1 whole seedless orange, with peel, finely chopped in food processor
1/3 c. orange brandy (my sis uses Grand Marnier)
1/2 c. water
1 c. sugar
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/8 tsp. ground cloves
Combine all ingredients together in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Chill and serve as side dish. Makes about 3 cups.

Gretha has been my friend since 2009. We were in a co-op gallery together and she visited me in the hospital after my stroke. She does beautiful plein air pastel paintings.
