For my 2018 calendar, I invited art friends and colleagues to contribute their favorite FLAVOR combination, along with a recipe and a story. I received 12 great combos and I used the ingredients for my inspiration.
This month I’m featuring the story and recipe of artist Sarah Peroutka.
Here is the still life I painted from. I had to paint quickly to capture the nectarines before they turned brown!

Fruit Kuchen
My mother and grandmother made this summer dessert, popular in their small town of Mayville, Wisconsin.”Kuchen” means “cake,” but this is more of a coffee cake. With flavors of fruit, cinnamon, and butter, it’s simple, classic, and irresistible.

Fruit Kuchen
Crust:
1 c. softened butter 3/4 c. sugar 2 egg yolks (reserve the whites) 2-1/2 c. flour 1 teaspoon salt
Place ingredients in a bowl and use a pastry cutter to mix. Press crumbly dough into the bottom and sides of a 12×17 jelly roll pan.
Arrange 5-6 cups fruit onto the top of the crust in rows or patterns: raspberries, peaches, plums, apricots, blueberries, or blackberries. Cover entire crust with fruit.
Custard:
4 eggs plus the two whites 1 c. sugar 1/2 c. heavy milk or cream Couple dashes of salt
Whisk together and pour over fruit. Sprinkle plain cinnamon over fruit and bake in a 350-degree oven for 45 mins. until edges are brown and custard is set. Cool, then run a knife around the edge and cut into squares.
Calendar Contributor Spotlight
I met Sarah a few years ago at one of our artists’ luncheons. She proved herself invaluable as she took copious notes at our discussions and then emailed us with the results!
Here’s how she tells her story: “My professional career was in public administration where I worked primarily with nonprofits and educational institutions. I love art, beauty, and working with my hands. I love my family and spending time with them and I toss all these interests and competing interests into the air and say, woo-hoo! Whatever lands in my hand on any given day is what I pursue. Recent creative passions have included pastels; hand-built ceramics; Madhubani style painting learned in India; and urban sketching. I remain a jack of all trades and master of none.”
